How to Fix Scratches on Your Car

Finding scratches on your vehicle is always annoying. Depending on the severity, you may be able to fix scratches on your car yourself. While some scratches can be buffed or waxed off, others scratches aren't so simple to remove. Getting a few scratches over time while driving around Lorena is inevitable and part of general wear and tear, but they can always be removed, which helps preserve the value of your car. There are different types of scratches, but the most common is clearcoat scratches. Follow the steps below to learn about removing clear coat scratches from your Honda.

Removing Clearcoat Scratches

Clearcoat scratches only affect the clear coat on your vehicle, and they are the most common type of scratch. Maybe it happened when you drove down that gravel road in McGregor, or maybe your dog jumped up on the side of your car because he was thrilled to see you. Regardless of how and when it happened, removing clear coat scratches is pretty easy.

  1. Clean the area around the scratch with soapy water and a towel to ensure that no dirt or debris accidentally gets rubbed into the paint and causes even more damage.
  2. Next, tape off the scratch around it so you'll know precisely where it is. Otherwise, as you start to fix the scratch, it could become difficult to find the scratch.
  3. Before you start sanding, spray down the scratch and the sandpaper with water.
  4. Gently sand the scratch down. If the scratch is deep, use 3000 grit sandpaper. If it's not too deep, use 5000 grit. Smooth out the area by going against the grain of the scratch.
  5. Continue to respray and sand the scratch until it's gone. If you started with 3000 grit, move to the 5000 grit to blend the scratch into the surrounding area.
  6. When the scratch is no longer visible, clean the surface one more time. Then, with a microfiber towel, use a swirling motion to add "fine" polish onto the area where the scratch was located. Once the area is polished, use a clean microfiber towel to remove any excess polish and lightly buff the area.
  7. Add some wax to the surface to protect your clearcoat and add a protective layer to your paint.

How to Fix a Dent in Your Car

Small dents are just part of owning a vehicle in the Waco area. Fortunately, minor dents can often be fixed at home. Don't let a small dent ruin the appearance or value of your car. Anyone can fix a dent in a vehicle with one of these two methods below:

  • Pick up a suction cup dent puller from your local auto parts store, or from the parts department at Greg May Honda. With this tool, you can create a strong vacuum with the suction cup, which makes it easy to pull out a dent.
  • Another method involves a hairdryer and mallet, but it requires that you remove the body panel to fix it. Using a hairdryer, heat the area around the dent for several minutes and then take the mallet and gently knock the dent back into place. The heat from the dryer expands the metal and makes it easier to push it back into shape.
