The 2021 Honda Civic Type R hit the lots at the end of 2020, much to the delight of fans of this high-performance version of the popular compact car. It got a few changes from the 2020 version, but what’s even more exciting to some is the chance to snap up one of only 600 Civic Type R Limited Edition cars.
There were rumors about the possibility of Limited Edition cars making it to U.S. dealerships, and it was confirmed at the end of 2020, just before dealerships started taking delivery of the sought-after ride.
Let’s take a look at both the standard 2021 Honda Civic Type R and the Limited Edition model.
2021 Honda Civic Type R
Starting Price: $38,450
The Civic Type R got a number of updates in 2020, and many of those features carry over into 2021, including revised suspension and brakes, modified interior and exterior styling, and the new Boost Blue color.
Powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the Type R pushes out 306 horsepower and 25 lb-ft of torque. If you’re considering this little powerhouse, you better like driving a 6-speed manual—that’s the only available option.
Drivers who like fast cars won’t mind as, during testing, the Type R ripped from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds and took the quarter mile in just 13.5 seconds at 107 MPH.
While you need to save those speeds for the track, the 2021 Civic Type R does come equipped with impressive standard safety features to help keep you safe no matter where you’re driving. Standard safety equipment includes:
- Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
- Advanced Front Airbags
- SmartVent® Front Side Airbags
- Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor
- Anti-Lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Distribution, and Brake Assist
- Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control
- Front Three-Point Seat Belts with Automatic Tensioning System
- Lower Anchors and Tethers For Children (LATCH) System In The Rear Seating Positions
- Child-Proof Rear Door Locks
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System
- Multi-Angle Rearview Camera
2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition
Starting Price: $44,950
Lighter and more nimble than the Standard Type R, the Limited Edition won the FWD lap record at the Suzuka circuit in Japan. That win came just in time to get high-performance Honda enthusiasts excited about the car just ahead of its U.S. debut—but many may be disappointed.
Even those willing to pay $6,500 more than the Standard Type R may have trouble getting their hands on one as only 600 will hit U.S. soil. The differences between the Standard and Limited versions make the Limited very attractive to drivers who want to hit the racetrack or show off at the stoplight.
The Limited Edition is a full 46 pounds lighter than the Standard model. This was achieved by using lighter BBS wheels, removing rear heating ducts, and eliminating sound dampening materials. This helps the Limited Edition Civic Type R to pick up more speed more quickly even though the same engine is under the hood.
You’ll be easy to spot whether on the track or the street as the car only comes in eye-catching Phoenix Yellow.
What’s Coming in 2022?
While not much has been officially released about the 2022 Honda Civic Type R, you can expect both style changes and more power. The car is expected to have the same motor, but will be tweaked to deliver more of that power that makes it such a popular choice with high-performance compact car enthusiasts.
